Mermaid Parade on Coney Island
Saturday - 2006-06-24

The Mermaid Parade is a completely original creation that is that nation's largest art parade and one of New York City's greatest summer events. Founded in 1983 by Coney Island USA, the not-for-profit arts organization that also produces the Coney island Circus Sideshow, the Mermaid Parade pays homage to Coney Island's forgotten Mardi Gras which lasted from 1903 to 1954, and draws from a host of other sources resulting in a wonderful and wacky event that is unique to Coney Island. The Mermaid Parade celebrates the sand, the sea, the salt air and the beginning of summer, as well as the history and mythology of Coney Island, Coney Island pride, and artistic self-expression. The Parade is characterized by participants dressed in hand-made costumes as Mermaids, Neptunes, various sea creatures, the occasional wandering lighthouse, Coney Island post card or amusement ride, as well as antique cars, marching bands, drill teams, and the odd yacht pulled on flatbed.

Coney Island Cyclone Bike Ride
Friday - 2006-08-18

The Cyclone Ride goes to Coney Island Amusement Park (Brooklyn) from Manhattan. In July and August, we should get there just in time for fireworks! This is a casual ride at a relaxed pace. Bring locks as we plan to lock up and ride the rides. Bring money for food and amusements, and a swimsuit if you plan to hit the waves. We usually spend about an hour and a half in the park, on the beach (and in the water!), on the boardwalk, and at Nathan's, and everyone has a GREAT time! Some people return on the subway, and others ride.

Time's Up Beach Ride
Sunday - 2006-08-27

It's time for the Brooklyn Committee's favorite ride...the Beach Ride. Come discover what a quick and easy ride it is to the beach and the amazing nyc beach that is only accesible by bike or foot.(yeah, thats right: no cars & no parking & no subway...yeah bikes!) Come prepared (tools, tubes, water, etc.) to ride some miles at a brisk pace. We will be having a big communal picnic lunch so BRING SOMETHING TO SHARE (or take a quick detour to the grocery store in Breezy Point or the concession stands at Jacob Riis Park). Note: this is a one way ride, meaning that the ride leaders plan to kick it at the beach until the sun goes down. (hey man! we like the beach! and after sunning and swimming all day, we prefer to ride back in the evening time.) Everyone is welcome to stay and ride back with us, however, you can ride back on your own (we will give you directions & no worries, it's super-easy!) or there is an A train a couple miles from the beach.
